Nurses - job opportunities

The work available for nurses is primarily with the film units.

Although we do use nurses for ‘daily’ or ‘occasional’ work typical ‘unit nurse’ assignments are 3-10 weeks long, working 12 hour days and often 6 day weeks. We don’t have traditional ‘full time’ employment opportunities but good nurses often achieve continuity of work (if they want it) by being personally requested by clients from one film as they go to their next.

The hours and schedules of our work generally excludes nurses with family commitments. If you are unable to work long hours, occasionally work away from home, need weekends off, have regular social commitments or just can't miss Eastenders, this is not your kind of work! The hours and variability of location filming means that a reliable car and good A-Z is an essential.

Experience suggests that our nursing work is particularly suitable to flight nurses (freelance or agency), nurses who work long term with agencies and banks, and freelance practitioners who can make themselves available at short notice. All applicants must be qualified general nurses with at least 3 years post qualification experience in healthcare. Applicants should have recent work experience in A&E or in prehospital care and be confident in providing advanced first aid outside a hospital environment. Nurses will need to demonstrate the experience and confidence to diagnose, treat on-site or refer patients without direct supervision.

We especially welcome candidates who have aero-medical repatriation experience or nurses who have provided healthcare outside hospital environments both in the UK and overseas. Good references are essential. Good film unit nurses are extroverts who can quickly get to know groups of strangers, who are comfortable in new situations having been thrown 'in at the deep end' and who can generally make people laugh no matter how tired cold or wet they are. The job demands self motivation, reliability and ultimately a genuine interest in the well-being of your clients. The novelty of working with film units is short lived. We have proved time and time again that nurses who cannot tolerate watching very monotonous and repetitive filming (often in the cold and wet) with often only a few minor ailments to treat each day are not cut out for this work. Although we do keep lists of potentially suitable nurses across the UK, we predominantly recruit in London and the South East since this is where most of our work is based. We particularly like to hear from nurses close to Shepperton Studios as we have work there on a fairly ongoing basis.
